Does a purely materialist view of science lead to the denial of moral responsibility? A reader says “No!” Benjamin Wiker says “Yes!” |
||||
"Not Your Fault!", by Dr. Benjamin Wiker, is very interesting and entertaining. But there's only one problem with it. It completely distorts and misrepresents the beliefs of scientists and atheists in general, or even agnostics and non-Christians. No atheist or agnostic has ever stated that people who commit crimes are not responsible for what they do (unless they happen to be insane), or that they should not be imprisoned if they commit a crime as far as I know. And I am not an atheist. This article sets up so many straw men it's in danger of becoming a fire hazard ! And it rehashes the ridiculous notion that Darwinism is responsible for the atrocities of the Nazis and other evil regimes such as the former Soviet Union and China. Did Genghis Khan and Tamerlane need Darwin's theories to slaughter vast number of people in the centuries before Darwin ? Or the Catholic church when it slaughtered enormous numbers of innocent women who were believed to be witches ? Or Christians and Muslims to slaughter each other during the crusades ? Or Europeans to slaughter the natives of both North and South America in the name of Christianity? Of course not. People have been oppressing and slaughtering each other all over the globe for thousands of years . To blame Darwin's theories for any of this is not only grossly unfair but ludicrous. - R. B. |

In a recent email, "The Seven Deadly Sins: They're Not Your Fault! Your DNA Made You Do It" I reported on a Discover magazine article that blithely asserted that the notion of sin was passé, and is being replaced by a purely scientific description of the various evolutionary and chemical causes of what used to be called the seven deadly sins—pride, envy, wrath, sloth, avarice, gluttony, and lust. In my explication, I made the connection between atheism, a reductionist, materialist view of science, and the denial or moral responsibility. |

The Darwin-Hitler Connection? Whether there is a connection between Darwin and Hitler is, to say the least, a hot-button issue (and so cooler heads rarely prevail). It would clarify things considerably if we would distinguish between Darwinism and evolution. Darwinism is the 19th century version of evolutionary theory, put forth by Darwin himself, but resting on the larger intellectual currents of materialism that had been saturating Europe for well over two centuries. Evolution is the amazing fact that a vast multitude of related species have appeared and disappeared over millions upon millions of years. Darwin tried to explain the fact of evolution using the larger secular intellectual framework provided by materialist philosophy. Why point this out? Because it helps us out two errors that cause confusion. First, it would be dead wrong to say that evolution leads to Hitler. Evolution is simply the astounding and growing set of facts that lead us to understand how dynamic and creative nature is. But second, it is undeniable that a purely materialist version of evolution that asserts that human evolution advances when superior tribes exterminate inferior tribes, superior races exterminate inferior races, and when the more fit are allowed to live and breed—all that does lead to Hitler. But that is exactly what Darwin argues in his Descent of Man. So, while Darwin was quite admirable as a man (and would be horrified at Nazism), we would be lying to ourselves to pretend that there is no connection between Darwinism and the Nazis. So, making the case that there is a Darwin-Hitler connection does not at all mean that there is an evolution-Hitler connection. We may feel free to continue our inquiries into the complex and amazing story of evolution, and leave both Darwinism and Hitler behind. |

Putting the Salem Witch Trials into Historical Perspective And the Crusades, the Inquisition, and the witch burnings? Contemporary historians have now established that the horrific images of the Inquisitions are largely a myth concocted first by the political enemies of Spain-mainly English writers who shaped our American understanding of that event-and later by the political enemies of religion. Henry Kamen’s book The Spanish Inquisition is subtitled “A Historical Revision”, and it is a long book, because Kamen has a lot of revising to do. One of his chapters is called “Inventing the Inquisition.” He means that much of the modern stereotype of the Inquisition is essentially made up. How many people were executed for heresy by the Inquisition? Kamen estimates that it was around 2,000. These deaths are all tragic, but we must remember that they occurred over a period of 350 years. Religion-inspired killings simply cannot compete with the murders perpetrated by atheist regimes. Taken together, the Crusades, the Inquisition, and the witch burnings killed approximately 200,000 people over a five-hundred year period. We have to recognize that atheist regimes have in a single century murdered more than one hundred million people. Dinesh D'Souza |

"If reproduction as such is limited and the number of births decreased, then the natural struggle for existence, which only allows the strongest and healthiest to survive, will be replaced by the obvious desire to save at any cost even the weakest and sickest; thereby a progeny is produced, which must become ever more miserable, the longer this mocking of nature and its will persists....A stronger race will supplant the weaker, since the drive for life in its final form will decimate every ridiculous fetter of the so-called humaneness of individuals, in order to make place for the humaneness of nature, which destroys the weak to make place for the strong." The völkisch concept of the world recognizes that the primordial racial elements are of the greatest significance for mankind. In principle, the State is looked upon only as a means to an end and this end is the conservation of the racial characteristics of mankind. Therefore on the völkisch principle we cannot admit that one race is equal to another. By recognizing that they are different, the völkisch concept separates mankind into races of superior and inferior quality. On the basis of this recognition it feels bound, in conformity with the eternal Will that dominates the universe, to postulate the victory of the better and stronger and the subordination of the inferior and weaker. And so it pays homage to the truth that the principle underlying all Nature’s operations is the aristocratic principle and it believes that this law holds good even down to the last individual organism….The völkisch belief holds that humanity must have its ideals, because ideals are a necessary condition of human existence itself. But, on the other hand, it denies that an ethical ideal has the right to prevail if it endangers the existence of a race that is the standard-bearer of a higher ethical ideal. For in a world which would be composed of mongrels and negroids all ideals of human beauty and nobility and all hopes of an idealized future for our humanity would be lost for ever. On this planet of ours human culture and civilization are indissolubly bound up with the presence of the Aryan. If he should be exterminated or subjugated, then the dark shroud of a new barbarian era would enfold the earth…. Hence the folk concept of the world is in profound accord with Nature’s will; because it restores the free play of the forces which will lead the race through stages of sustained reciprocal education towards a higher type, until finally the best portion of mankind will possess the earth and will be free to work in every domain all over the world and even reach spheres that lie outside the earth.
