| A Drama Unfolds - Letters to the editor |
I can not believe that this can go on in this day and age. Terri’s husband is starving her and nobody can do anything to stop him. I hope he is ready to receive retribution for his actions. What would he do if this happened to one of his children. I lost a sister over 30 years ago and still my sisters and I feel like there is a missing link in our family. We just don’t feel whole. I pry to God to help Terri and her family. - J. P. I am a Canadian and have been to the states many many times...I am ashamed to be your next door neighbor right now...after watching this side show on CNN for a few weeks I think its safe to say that you guys have a very serious problem with the definition of justice... A guy can diddle a child get out of prison after a short sentence and proceed to rape and kill a little girl because he has rights...in any case where a guy rapes a kid his rights should be revoked for the rest of his life ....consider the child's mental state at the time of this crime and during the rest of their lives....in short your Justis system has no problem snuffing out the life of a poor defenseless disabled woman who"s family very much wants her to live ...in effect sentenced to death by the courts on the basis of hearsay but you will allow a CONVICTED child molester to roam the streets and ruin countless lives without any supervision...Unless they can be supervised keep the dirty bastards locked up... and if the waiting list for supervision is 100 years then so be it...your founding fathers must be rolling over in their graves right now and you should all pay as much attention to the ways your laws are written and enforced as you do about cleaning up Iraq or any other place...my gram-ma used to tell me "clean up your own back yard before you help your neighbor clean their's.I really love your country as much as my own and am proud of the way we policed the globe during the world wars and since but we really have to look at the fact that we seem to stick up for other country's that cant fight their own battles but we neglect our own Innocent children and some people who can not speak for them self...I am truly ashamed God Have Mercy On Your Soul - C. C. I find it extremely bold and presumptuous for you assume that every reader is in agreement with you. When it comes to science politics and theology, often I agree and often I do not. Other times I am not as you term a, "concerned citizen". In the case of Terri, I am torn. Has not God with His Holy Spirit given us the right even the responsibility to discern. A thoughtful and compassionate response based on God's truth is what we ought to pray for in this matter. We are participants in God's creation. We have been given direct authority to rightly divide situational ethics. Our greatest job is to pray that God's will be done, not what we think God's will is. You address me as a concerned citizen, what is more concerning is that all over the world there are people purposely being starved for the economic and political gain of a few. Or for the many (as is the case for the USA). Why is it that we waist our time responding to the medias agenda and not the real problems? Maybe if we focus on Terri long enough we can justify the distraction from all the injustices that are happening outside the country of USA. I am a concerned citizen of the world. - D. M. It is criminal that this is being allowed without anything in writing from her. I think Felos is just as guilty as Mike Sciavo is. I thought hearsay was inadmissible in court? I agree with the Schundlers that Mike Schiavo is doing this out of pure selfishness and no concern whatsoever for Terri. I hope, somehow, something good happens for Terri befor it is too late. - E. K. I am only 15 but i have to say this has to be the most insane thing i have heard of in a long time. We sent troops to Iraq to fight against Saddam Hussein becouse he was a barbarian.Well i want some someone to tell me how him starving his people is different from us starving ours THERE IS NONE!! Do the officals think its different becouse this is America, this is suppose to be the land of the free and a land for people who love one another and care for peolpe, for people to have rights. This is time we start showing some respect and careing for Terri we as americans should be more careing and loving and starving a person and THE GOVERMENT ALLOWING IT......that is a really bad start. I can honestly say I have never been more imbarressed to say I am from America, i should be able to say I am from America the land of the free....not the land of the starving. I heard her husband say on the news she was peaceful.........lets starve him and find out if its peaceful. He is basiclly killing her and the law is on his side. How do goverment officals sleep at night knowing our country is going to pices like this I never thought that America would end up like this. What have we come to. - T. W. It is too evil to rot in hell - he should stay there for eternity tortured to extremes in a slow burn. if there is any higher power, he will get his someday. - M. M. PLEASE HELP TERRI THIS IS MURDER. PLEASE LET HER LIVE. - B. E. I cannot fathom this happening in this day and age and, especially,in the United States. It's something that we hear about in a third world country...NOT IN THE GRAND USA !! But, this poor woman, who has NEVER hurt anyone, is blatently being MURDERED!! And not even the president can stop it ? I ( and I'm sure alot of people ) have not been able to sleep and through the day, all of a sudden I'll see her face. It sickens me to think what is happening to her and what kind of a country my grandchildren will be living in, with the way our country coming to be. Our SOLDIERS are being scandalized for mistreating the ANIMALS, from other countries, who are killing US. Yet, we allow the MURDER of a Christian woman by a man who has a piece of paper and who is committing adultry ( which, by the way, is AGAINST the law ). There are too many holes in his story. And judge( he's not worthy of any capitalization) Greer? How much is HE getting paid? You mean to tell us that even the president could not get this hearing out of that courtroom? It's probably too late for Terri, now, but when she goes to a MUCH BETTER PLACE. I sure hope the next episode is a MURDER TRIAL FOR BOTH OF THEM. And I will be in the front row. Because, you see, in my eyes and the world's, they are definitely a DISGRACE. Mr. & Mrs. Shindler, I am so sorry. The fiance'....I would sleep with one eye open! - K. W. It's too late for Terri to divorce the authority of her pull-the-plug husband. - I. O. I feel sad for Terri Schiavo's parents. I really do. Have they no faith that sees beyond the grave? How will they answer to God for denying Terry her entrance to eternal life, for fifteen long years? "O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?" Let us all not give the grave the victory in this, another example of America's fear of death above all other fears. Let us, rather, get on to the greater fears of poverty, unemployment, racism, militarism, and other social issues that are destroying this great nation of ours, and by extension, the world. ANY ONE who has worked in Hospice, had a family member in Hospice, or looked into Hospice as an alternative to 'dying in a hospital bed with all your enzymes balanced' knows that Terry Schiavo is NOT being 'starved to death, suffering cruelly' etc. Hospice care = Palliative care = freedom from pain and suffering while being eased into as natural and peaceful a death as possible. (I worked in Hospice as a chaplain for five years and saw many people weaned from feeding tubes without distress to patient or family members. When you say 'several doctors...' let's also point out that at least one of these medical professionals only 'diagnosed' Terri via videotape! Come on!! Doesn't it seem strange to you that Terri's parents had the media say that she was denied Communion on Good Friday - when in face, a priest had given her Communiion the day the tube was removed?!? And, as I know as a Hospice and hospital chaplain, the Sacrament of the Sick is NOT to be re-administered within days of having been given - according to Catholic teaching - which clearly the parents are unfamiliar with on several counts. Then the press reported that Terri was given communion on Easter Sunday but 'only a drop of grape juice, because her tongue was so dry.' Baloney! Any medical person can see right through that claim - Terri has not been able to swallow for 15 years! She has been and is "NPO" - NOTHING BY MOUTH! Let's see that in your 'to the source'. - A. D. Your article includes the line, "She is not guilty of anything." I know there is some debate as to whether or not her bulimic condition led to the heart attack that in turn led to the brain damage she now suffers. Regardless, this statement is not true. If that is indeed true, she is guilty of what all the rest of us are guilty of...sin. When Paul wrote in I Cor. 6 that "our body is the temple of God," there was the express direction that we are to care for that body, not abuse it. Psychological issues that may lead to bulimia aside, stating that she is "not guilty of anything" is very misleading if in fact her actions in any way led to her current state. Somewhere in our society, someone has to take responsibility for the consequences of their actions and quit blaming everyone else. In response to all the Christian groups that have taken up her cause, I would ask this question: "If the same amount of money and effort had been directed toward mentally healthy but starving children in 3rd world countries, how many of them might have been able to grow up to live fulfilling lives that Terry will never be able to live?" The problem is, helping starving children doesn't make good press. I don't know Terry's heart, so I don't know if she is a believer with her heavenly reward awating her, or whether she chose not to trust in Jesus as her Savior and Lord. If she did not make a public profession of her faith, we still can hope that in her diminished mental capacity she turned to the Lord and found salvation. It greatly bothers me that a group of Christians who hold up God's Word which says, "For me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain" (Phil. 1:21) seem to be so intent on not letting someone with no quality of life on this earth go on to her heavenly reward. Just a few thoughts to consider. - R. There is no right to die. The Constitution states we have the right to LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS, Judge Greer. This whole drama is a travesty. One person has been given dictatorial powers over a helpless woman. Whatever he says is accepted. Anyone who disagrees is denied. Where is kindness? Where is Justice? Where is truth? The appetite for power corrupts absolutely. Insanity rules and everything has been turned upside down--giving a guardian the power to kill. Michael has made up his mind and the Judge is acting as a cat's paw to carry out Michael's wishes. What law school is Judge Greer's proud alma mater? - D. I just wanted to tell you that your website, terrisfight.org, was an incredibly valuable resource for me. It helped me to see how Terri's family are being manipulated by the extreme elements of the religious right. It is unfortunate that people like yourselves find it useful to exploit Terri's distraught family to further your political aims. I find it interesting that many of the same members of congress who voted for "Terri's Law" last weekend, an illegal subversion of the checks and balances system of our federal goverment, are the same ones who support a ban on gay marriage. It's rather amusing how hypocritical they are, claiming they wish to defend the sanctity of marriage on one hand, while interfering with the right of a husband to choose how to care for his wife. Though your website is a wondeful resource in helping Michael Schiavo to argue his case before the public, I cannot support it. - J. H. I wish I could tell Mr.Michael Schiavo what's in my heart: As a human being you know who you are.You know your plans, your intentions and purpose in life. But there is our God the Creator who knows who we are. Terry's sufferings is known to Him.Are you not concern that you could also be in the same situation where Terry is now?But how if when you experience what she is experiencing now......your pain will be more unbearable and you'll suffer even painful? How if Terry reincarnates in the body of your so called "fiancee" as you Michael, heartless human being. It is very sad because she is wanting to live. The same thing will happen to you.You will be yelling and screaming "don't starve me to death please".But your fiancee will do the same thing what you are doing now to Terry. - H. B. I CANNOT BELIEVE THERE ARE AMERICANS OUT THERE THAT THINK THIS IS GOOD FOR TERRI. THE ONLY PERSON THIS IS GOOD FOR IS MICHAEL. WHAT IS THE HURRY. WHO IS SHE HURTING. I PRAY EVERYDAY FOR A SAINT TO COME AND HELP TERRY. AFTER READING SOME OF THE THINGS YOU HAVE ON THIS WEB SIGHT, I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THE JUDGES DIDN'T SEE ANY DOULT THERE. MICHAEL IS COVERED WITH DOULT. I AM A VERY SIMPLE PERSON BUT THE FACTS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES. THERE IS NO DOULT IN MINE MIND THAT MICHAEL IS LIEING ABOUT TERRI'S LAST WISHES. AND THE USA HAS SENTENCED HER TO DEATH. I PRAY FOR YOUR FAMILY AND I PRAY THAT " GODS WILL BE DONE" CONCERNING MICHAEL. - M. C. God bless you for your article speaking the truth, that Teresa Schiavo's constitutional right to life has been completely stripped by these tyrannical judges that are interpreting the laws through the political agenda of the radical pro death groups. If only she were a criminal ! Or an animal, she would have had recourse to be saved from death by starvation and dehydration. Please help the Christian church here in America learn these truths, many Christians have bought into the radical pro death cultural forces. - E. S. I want to tell you that I am profoundly devastated by what is happening to Terri Schiavo. I think that this is only a warning that the end is near. This kind of thing would not happen in the United States of America if we had not pushed God, The Living God, out of our country, and out of our Government. I am not usually a person that gives up. That is because in my life, I have saw, first hand, the devastation that the devil can do. And, on the other hand, I have also saw the miracles that God can perform. But so many people have turned a blind eye to Terri's situation. They say that Terri would be better off dead. They don't even realize, that as they say this, what they are telling me is that my daughter Michelle, would be better off dead. That makes me so angry, because, of coarse we would all be better off without these breakable bodies. That's just a stupid thing to say. We would all be better off being present with the Lord. But I think he is capable of calling us home, without the help of someone who don't want the responsibility of taking care of a handicapped spouse. No one wants to have handicaps to live with. But we don't kill ourselves over them. At least if we love God, and the life he gave us. And I believe that Terri feels the same way that I do about that, that is why I believe that this is Judicial murder. And I think it needs to be stopped. I think it needs to be stopped now. This is not Gods plan. This is what we have created by not voting. Or by voting the wrong way. We need to find a way to put an end to this murdering, to get out of marriage. I think that Scott Peterson would have been ok if he would have strangled his wife till her heart stopped, then got a right to die lawyer, and an activist Judge, then starved and dehydrated Lacy to death. The world will watch and do nothing. We have learned that by watching the Terri Schiavo tragedy. I want to know how to stop the madness. I think you do too. Will you please send me information on who to contact, what to do, that kind of information. - L. D. A. God Bless Terry…..God Bless. Easter is here, I know God will save her, and especially he will hopefully forgive our sins. There has been so much to forgive. Well, those who rape and kill children should be murdered themselves!! Think about it …here I am a mother of three young children, who’s father is in a white collar prison for trying to get money…but did not get ANY and he is NON- VIOLENT (yet he his given 46 months and that is after he cooperated with the feds)!!! And yet there are sex offenders out there. Free to prowl the grounds of our earth and after our young children. All I know is there is a lot wrong with this world and I pray that we fix it before it is to late!!! It may be to late. I do hope and pray, as always that things will change. And they better or we really are headed down hell’s road!!! - C. S. I believe there needs to more written on how inhumane Terri is being treated. The story: 2005-3-23 A Drama Unfolds Wesley J. Smith is a good beginning. I agree 100% that Terri is being treated worse than a criminal, also worse than an animal. This is the most outrageous thing I have heard of happening. And only 2 people agree it's for the best, the judge and her husband. HOW HORRIBLE. I just pray she does not feel pain. I hope her parents find comfort in the fact that they truly did all they could do to protect her and it is completely out of their hands. I have lost a son, and it was bad enough; but I just can't imagine if one of my children were having to starve to death and was against the law for me to try to give water or food. I believe she does feel unless God has interceded and miraculously removed the pain. I am a nurse and have comatose patients. I know for a fact they could feel. And I know they tried to communicate at times. I could also see when they appreciated when their comforts were seen to. e. And they better or we really are headed - G. S. If one was to put a gun to Terri's head would they be convicted of murder? - M. C. CONCERNING THE TREATMENT OF TERRI SCHIAVO. IN THE LATE 1800'S IN THE UNITED STATES THE SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS WAS CALLED UPON & THE FIRST ORGANIZATION TO PROTECT A CHILD FROM SEVERE ABUSE & NEGLECT AFTER ALL OTHER AVENUES WERE EXHAUSTED. HOW ARE ANIMAL RIGHTS PROTECTED IN FLORIDA COMPARED TO THE RIGHTS OF TERRI SCHIAVO & OTHERS LIKE HER? ASTONISHING ISN‘T IT, THAT THERE WAS AN ORGANIZATION FOR THE PROTECTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS BEFORE AN ORGANIZATION FOR THE PROTECTION OF CRUELTY TO CHILDREN. I IMPLORE YOU TO RESEARCH THE FLORIDA LAWS FOR THE PROTECTION OF ANIMALS. SOUNDS ABSOLUTELY LUDICROUS, LIKEWISE IS THIS ENTIRE FIASCO. I APPLAUD YOUR GALLANT STAND! MORE THAN 100 YEARS LATER, THE SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS MAY HOLD THE KEY IN ITS LAWS TO PROTECT ANOTHER HELPLESS HUMAN BEING. - C. T. IF GOD HAD WANTED TERRI SCHIAVO TO LIVE HE COULD HAVE INTERVENED. SINCE HE DIDN'T IT IS OBVIOUSLY GOD'S WILL THAT TERRI SCHIAVO SHOULD BE RELIEVED OF HER SUFFERING. GET OVER IT AND STOP TRYING TO TELL EVERYONE WHAT GOD'S WILL IS BECAUSE YOU'RE NOT NECESSARILY RIGHT. - R. K. I have already prayed to Jesus! What else can I do to help Terri? - G. K. Shame on you for exploiting the pain of an American family for your own ends. You and your organization are a disgrace to humankind. May you rot in hell forever, where you rightly belong. - T. S. There is no poor soul trapped inside her body. Terri died years ago. Her primitive brain is still functioning because it's be artificially fed and hydrated. Let her body go; her soul is in heaven with God. - S. L. Personally and professionally, as a minister, there is only one that has the right to sustain or take life and that one being God. Since Terry has been legally "brain dead" for several years, and if God had so chosen her to live, He would have and could have healed her as He is the Great Physician, then to "artifically" keep her alive, would not be God's will for her. It is time we stop playing God and let her go! . - M. E. Every morning I wake up and realize that Terri is still being tortured to death by a traitor husband and a corrupt judicial system, I weep. I have trouble going about my day; eating, drinking, preparing for Easter with my children without a deep dread and sorrow, knowing this is now allowed in America and she lies there defenseless, suffering. I talk to everyone I can and it seems that many, who rely on public radio or our local newspaper for their information, are deceived. Terri has been dehumanized. Please know some of us out here are heartbroken with you and enraged by the injustice. I have sent emails begging for this to be reversed and feel helpless. I didn't use to pray as often as I should but this has driven me to my knees for God's help over and over again. The love on Terri's face as she looks at her mom on your video is unmistakable. I'm sending your website address to everyone I know. I love you guys and I am so, so sorry, - K. N. If not, I want people to know that there are people, despite the polls, that support the Schindlers and feel there is something very wrong here with Michael Schiavo, Felos and supposed "Judge" Greer. - D. I am hurt beyond words..betrayed by our own justice system..how cannot our own justice system feel no mercy? where is the quality of mercy? My prayers are with the family..God help our country where mercy and understanding is not considered. - J. K. I think Michael Schiavo is a sick f***, and will burn in hell for what he is doing! None of what he says should be taken seriously in a court, after he made promises he could not keep, under oath! I am outraged about the courts decisions to starve Terri. This is unbelievable! - K. L. Her husband is killing her. And we are letting him; he is a criminal. He has manipulated with time. Time has been his main arsenal. We are idiots for allowing him to do this. Lacy is with me and agrees. This will haunt all forever. I have had an eating disorder for years and have known others with this disorder. Does it not strike anyone as odd that most of us don’t die like her? Has anyone checked the statistics? Her death was unusual and it’s being treated like it’s not. What’s going on here? I know we will get what we give. May her “husband” get all he gave. - K. L. I tried to get 5/5 - it was excellent and very informative. We leave Terri in God's hands now - someone who will not let her down "Can a Mother forget her baby?" Never a truer word was spoken. - O. Our Judiciary is out of control. Convicted murders would never get the treatment Terri is receiving from the State of Florida. If it is such a painless way to die then I suggest Florida start starving their death row inmates and save the tax payers some money. GOD HELP US ALL OF THIS WOMAN IS ALLOWED TO BE STARVED TO DEATH IN THE FREE REPUBLIC OF AMERICA!!! - R. T. I worked in both county jails also a private prison ,,,,,,, the prisoners. have more rights than the guards and officers.....There is big flaw with the United States, So, much money is used to save the animals and so much to help other countries. What about our own people the homeless. People that do not have insurance and cannot buy the Medicine that is needed , we have to decide each day which meds to cut back .....so, that we don't run out, so the medicine will last longer. I have been disabled for a little over 5 years.. Thank you for letting me speak, - B. C. In 1981 My daughter born at premature, born at 26 weeks. She fought to live for three weeks. Horribly, after a severe brain bleed, she died. I know the the painful difference of brain dead and awareness. My daughters brain waves flattened, her tiny body stiffened and her eyes became like crystals. Everything about her tiny life was gone. I was barely 19. I asked questions that mattered most to me, could she recover? Could she dream? Did she feel? One small chance? In my Daughters case, it was not so. Her body started shutting down. She became as all dead brain humans do, her color quickly became motley, she no longer responded to any sound, nor touch. She was gone Terri Schiavo is not brain dead. She is alive and aware. Life is. Death is not. Terri is a human being. We have survivorship on this planet that suffer forced starvation. Ask a child in poverty , ask the Holocaust survivors if starvation is painful. Why are we letting one man get away with legal murder? Why is a women being allowed to be treated as chattel? Is this now the dark ages? If he no longer wishes to be part of this. Then why not allow her family that still loves her to take care of her. The Terri, that despicable man married, has died. In a sense he already has what he states Terri wanted. I believe, Terri survives because something inside of her soul wants to live. - M. M. I visited your website and would like to know where I can access the documentation of Michael Schiavo’s testimony stating he was care for Terri the rest of her life. I’ve been in many discussions with others about this and I would like to be able to give them “documented” statements. Thanks! - K. W. I believe in "the right to die". Congress has no business being involved in the Terry Schiavo case. Congress is not a judicial part of government. They did the right thing in sending it to Federal Court. I agree with Mr. Schiavo in honoring his wife's wishes. Mr. Schiavo has nothing to gain by his wife's death, but for him to deny his wife's wishes would be on his conscience for the rest of his life. Or to release his wife to his parents to keep her in this vegetative state would be denying his wife's wishes. His wife is brain dead and on a tube for life support. If God wants to keep her alive with the tube removed that is up to him. Many Christians believe you go to Paradise after death. To keep Terry from Paradise in a vegetative state, is "cruel and unusual punishment." Animals are put to death when they are in Terry situation, brain dead. Do we keep animals alive feeding them through a tube. We are more humane to animals than to humans. Both my wife and I have had a living will for about five years. Our son has a copy and we make it plain that we do not want any life supports if the physicians have determined that we will not have any quality of life remaining. - R. S. I'm sorry but I have followed this for a long time and that article was absolutely horrible. He sites incidents that actually have nothing in common with what is going on. His opening is a mess of confusion and then he compares 70 days of PVS to 15 years. C'mon now---even those who support the efforts of the Schindler family are ashamed of these tactics. I was almost on their side until this. - S. It is very sad when an animal has more rights then a living human being , It's against the law to kill a animal or abuse one but yet on the other hand it's ok for the courts to starve a person to death , What is wrong with our justice system ? No-One has the right to say whether Terri must die and then starve her to death that is cruel and murder . What if our soldiers stood up and refuse to protect our country and said let us survive on our own but instead they gave their own life's to protect their country and us .Now why hasn't the people and the judges done the same thing to protect Terri ? If her husband cared so much about her he would have been there instead of having an affair with another woman and children by her , I don't call that Love .I call him a selfish low life non caring human being to let his own wife starve to death . She was very unlucky to have ever met him much less marry him , I feel sorry for the other woman also what happens if she becomes sick will he help murder her also ? Instead of our courts fighting to take Terri's life away from her they should have been fighting to take her husband's rights away from him and give them back to her parents. Those poor people gave her life not try and take it away . - P. R. I am praying for Terri to be allowed to live! No one has the right to take such measures to allow one to suffer and die. I pray that a miracle happens and a Judge will order her to be allowed to eat. I know we all say we don’t want to live as a vegetable, however, in the honor of her parents, she should be allowed the chance to survive this! I pray for their strength and honor to survive this horror and angels are surrounding their whole family. Amen - L. H. I WANTED TO SEND THIS SHORT FEEDBACK TO SAY THIS IS SO WRONG.!!! TAKING TERRI'S LIFE IS NOT RIGHT AT ALL . HAVE YOU ALL EVER READ GOD GIVETH, AND TAKETH AWAY. WEL THEY SHOULD.! I THINK IF GOD WANTED TO TAKE TERRI HE WOULD OF DONE THIS ALONG TIME AGO, I THINK ITS PRETTY OBVIOUS THAT HE INT READY FOR HER. SO WHAT GIVES THEM THE RIGHT TO TAKE HER LIFE, AND IF THEY TAKE HER LIFE I THINK I WILL START A PETITION GOING THAT THOSE INVOLED VOTING FOR THIS SHOULD DO TIME IN PRISON FOR, MURDER.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WELL THIS IS ALL I HAVE T SAY I PRAY FOR TERRI I PRAY THAT THIS WHATS HAPPENING WILL STOP AND LET HER LIVE. THIS IS WRONG DEAR LORD PLEASE HELP THE TERRI CASE I ASK THI IN JESUS NAME, AMEN - T.K. I have stood about all I can stand of the way this young lady is being treated. I believe if she was on a life support and that was what was breathing for her then I could understand taking her off of it as her wishes. I do not believe that starvation is anyone's wish and I don't believe that she ever told anyone that this is the way that she wanted to die. There is a police force in NY that puts people in jail and prison for starving of animals and now we have the same laws that are little these people do this to a human being and it is suppose her right, I don't think so. The law is telling this man it is ok to starve your wide to death!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I believe that if he wants to get away from the situation then he should file for a divorce and move on with his life and leave her alone. The parents are willing to take care of her for as long as it takes and that is all that should matter. If it was god's will for her to die she would have already been gone for as long as she has been without food or water. If this is our law to let murders life and kill a human being that has never done any wrong then someone had better step up and look at the laws that we have. I do not call this justice. LET TERRI LIVE UNTIL GOD IS READY FOR HER GOD WOULD NOT HAVE ANYONE STARVE TO DEATH NOT EVEN AN ANIMAL - M. W. I think "moral conservatives" need a big dose of reality. THOUSANDS of people are in situations like that of Terry Schiavo across the country and THOUSANDS make decisions just like that of her husband. Families face this question all the time because our medical skills are now at the point that "life" can be sustained indefinitely. Just because someone is breathing, is that "life?" Well, that would be answered differently based on each individual's moral framework. I repeat, based on each individual's moral framework. That means government should stay out of these family matters, i.e. the state and Congress. This is a family dispute between disagreeing parties. It is none of your business, my business, the state's business or the federal government's business. Would you have the governement telling you how you will take care of your elderly parents? Would you have the state telling you when your ailing father has had enough on machines, when the pain is too much, when you, as the adult caregiver, should let him go? If you've been anywhere near a death bed, you know that exiting this life is tough. The physical body will keep on long after the spirit wants to depart. That's because the survival mechanism is mechanical. But human beings are more than mere physical, survival machines. And this is what is missing in this entire debate over Terri. The human side. For pity's sake, let her go! - V. T. The arguments you present are totally unreasonable, illegal and without any merit whatsover--only emotion and illogic has been used by the writer. This woman deserves to die in peace--do we not believe that this life of ours in only temporary, our real life is with the Lord in Heaven? Let this poor woman die in piece and enter the kingdom of Heaven. Don't force her to live a vegitative life. Come to your senses! - A. I am writing in regard to the Terri Schiavo case. I can not understand why the American people are not being listened to. Where is our representation when the Judges just go and make decisions because of their own beliefs? New evidence that Terri's parents tried to admit is not even considered. We would not starve the worst criminal or an animal but we are starving a poor young woman that has done nothing wrong except to pick a very bad husband. There is enough evidence against him to make people doubt that he is looking out for her welfare. It seems he has a plan to destroy evidence that may convict him of something that he doesn't want to come to light. The whole world is watching what we are doing, we want them to have a democracy to treat their people well and yet they watch us starve a poor handicapped woman to death. Other people that are in our country and in wheel chairs or handicapped look at what is going on and wonder if they are next. Are They? God forgive us! - A. R. I'm going to pray for God's Righteous judgement on Terry and His just and due judgement on those who are assisting in an attempted murder of sociaty. I'm hungry for God's judgement. Justice. - J. B. I agree with ALL your points - well taken and spoken and the truth - that rotten bastard Shiavo will pay - I pray he pay the ultimate - God will intervene I am sure and like a story in the Old Testament when the pharohs children were murdered by the angel of death that God sent to Egypt - well Shiavo look out - your kids arent infallable either! Then he too will know the pain and suffereing that poor Mary and Bob and their family are going through as well - I cant believe this is happening in our country and you are right - child molestors have more rights than poor Terri - God Bless her - I am sick over this - and especially during the Holy Week - well I know it is the end times alright - I am a catholic too and I am sick to see this happening on the news - its like a mockery - she is the sacrifical lamb here - I want the Schindlers to know whatever happens a lot of people will not forget and when it comes to elections - I will remember too - Christians are being persecuted here like in the old days - and the lousy devil is running rampat and ruling this world - I just don’t know what to say anymore - except I am truly sorry for her family - D. J. M. Terri is a human being who without a dought responds to people and things around her. She in no way is a vegetable but yet suffers a disability, yes it is severe, but there is evidence that people in her exact same condition have with the therapy she has been denied have become functionable, happy, healthy individials. If a dog became ill with the same disability and we allowed it to starve to death and didn't put it on an iv we would be charged and sent to jail for cruelty to animals. It would be considered murder. We would also be given the option to put the dog to sleep which takes seconds and is quick, or try and save the dog and love it the way it was. How can killing Terri be allowed and ordered by the Judges? It's a disgrace and it is murder. A criminal on death row is killed with lethal injection, again a quick painless death. But we can take an innocent woman and sentence her to death because she simply didn't die on her own, wasn't perfect, and was disabled, by the most painful, drawn out death one could possible endure. Even the doctors who claim that she is unable to feel pain never so she definately does not feel, they always say they believe or think. Well that is like saying, I think that the baby in the trash can is dead, so let's bury it. I am so upset as our my family by this. A dog or murderer is give a quick painless death, a woman who did nothing to anyone is starved to death. - C. I think it is appalling that this is happening in the United States of America. I would think this is Russia or another communist nation. This is telling the world that we are an inhumane nation who denies rights to disabled individuals, as well as babies. I believe Terri would not be in this shape if her so called estranged husband/guardian with a woman and two kids, were to have been looking after Terri and her best interests. All he is looking after is his pocket book and her death certificate. What will this death certificate mean for him? Legally gotten, perhaps some insurance money, perhaps some malpractice litigation money. There has to be some reason why he has fought this tooth and nails to kill Terri. A man who had been married just 5 years to a woman doesn't have all that much dedication to following our as he says her last wishes. What a bunch of crap. Our legal system and judges buy that. I am hearing many women say that they told their husband if they become like Terri that they would not want to live. All I tell them is watch what you are saying, as the judges will respect your comments many years down the road. If you said them or if those words were put into your mouth by your husband. I believe Terri would never have never been in this condition if medical and rehabilitative treatment were not denied to her by her guardian and estranged husband. Bill Clinton did out nation a disservice by putting such irresponsible judges on the bench. I think he was selecting the judges that might serve him if he were in trouble, i.e. granting abortions, euthanasia, etc. I am sincerely disappointed with the judicial system and the biased media in this country. I think they would have portrayed Hitler as a saint, like they elevated Saddam Hussein and condemned our President who is a caring man with faith and morals. I thank God for President Bush and only wish that he carried more weight over these tyrants that have been selected to bench to serve our best legal interests. - P. J. I have an objection to part of the article that is printed on Terri's website. It doesn't present all the facts. If a patient can swallow efficiently, a feeding tube is not surgically implanted. Just because the food goes down her throat, doesn't mean it reaches her stomach. What happens is that all or part of the food goes in to her lungs. Over time, this leads to a life-threatening infection that usually can not be cured and becomes fatal. Bacteria in the blood stream can be killed by antibiotics, but an infection cause by foreign matter in the lungs can not, and is almost always fatal. Your article implies that Terri can swallow and insinuates that means she doesn't need a feeding tube, which is a distortion. Spreading half truths doesn't help your cause. - C. R. Hello, I am really shocked about the treatment to Terri and the lies from Michael schiavo. He has to be killed. He doesn´t earn to be alive. Try to get the money back, that had beed paid for Terri´s therapies. If you know for 13 years now that he had got so much money and did not spend it for Terri what did you do to get it for her? Tell it to a judge, to a court and let the judge see the videos about Terri. That is no problem of law that is a problem of how to treat a human being. 8 days without food and water. That is as bad as in the German KZ. All these people have to be punished for their work to kill Terri. I can´t understand the nurses and doctors in the hospice. They have to be violent to the police and give the food to Terri. I can´t imagine such behavior. That is impossible in Germany. Kind regards and I hope you will achieve that Terri will be alive. - C. Why hasn't Any lawyer pointed this out? Michael talking about 'taking care of Terri till she dies' - 'that her life expectancy was a long life'? Did he make the statement in any mediation meetings???? Also, did he swear in when he made the statement 'Terri's wishes are to die'???? If so, he has committed Perjury! I wish Terri and all of her family the best. I do not want to say this, but if she dies. GOD is saying "Terri, it's time to come home" Hopefully her parents can understand Everyone's page is already written. If there's foul play on Michael Schiavo's part.... Just like Laci Peterson, spoke from the Grave - So will Terri's Soul!!!!!! I would also suggest that Judge Greer be invested, he sure has gone through GREAT lengths to KILL a beautiful soul - Terri M. Schlinder. - J. V. That's some of the smartest thinking I've seen in a long time. Thanks so much for sharing it with me. You can flush the rest of your site, though. - Z. My father was hospitalized in a VA hospital and was comotos for 6 months. The doctors didn't expect him to live. It's now 16 years later and he just turned 92 and is doing great. If it hadn't been for his feeding tube, he wouldn't be with us today. - P. T. Why do we not demand that these judges go to see Terri for them self. How can anyone make a judgment on her not knowing for themself how she is with thier own Eyes. And why does this so called husband not have enough sense to step back and just let her parents take care of her.? It is because of MONEY. He stands to gain a lot of money. PLEASE lets help her. - K. C. Yes, I believe that the judges in Florida have sentenced this poor woman to death for doing absolutely nothing wrong. Where are all the bleeding heart liberals who are against capital punishment for murderers? They think it is okay to kill the innocent like the unborn, or this poor disabled woman. So murderers have more rights? What kind of society are we living in? I know Governor Bush is trying to step in. I agree that clemency is given to killers. I cannot believe what is going on here. This is so inhumane and unethical. The pain the poor parents and family of this woman must be unbearable. I can relate to it a bit because my own mother contracted Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, which is a 100% fatal neurological disease at the age of 50 in 1988 (CJD is in the same class of diseases as "mad cow disease"). A lot of neurologists have this air of superiority about them that I cannot stand. The first neurologist that we took my mother to thought she was just going through the "change of life" and recommended we place her in a mental hospital! This is from a medical doctor who is supposed to be trained in diagnosing diseases of the nervous system. My mother was eventually placed in Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx, New York where a correct diagnosis was made. But even there the neurologists were very cold to my family. They asked our permission to make a videotape of my mother. She was declining very quickly and could not recognize any of her relatives. We agreed because we were under the false assumption that they could do something to save her. We later learned that the disease was always fatal and they were making the video for teaching purposes. We felt used and felt my mother's dignity was violated. I am sorry to go on about my own experience when the topic is Terri. I just see so many similarities in how the brain damaged patient is treated. I am not a doctor but since there is another neurologist that says that Terri is not in a "persistent vegetative state" (that term is very cruel), Terri should be reconnected to her feeding tube and given a chance. Unfortunately, unless a miracle happens I don't believe that is going to happen. If this is how we treat our disabled in this country, God help us all. - J. I do not know what the outcome will be for your daughter but I know that whatever happens you will both be at peace with your family including Terry and at peace with your conscience because you are doing whatever that is possible to save her even if you do not succeed. One thing I know that if Michael succeeds in his mission he has the rest of his life haunted by the outcome. As regards his girlfriend may she be aware that if something similar might happen to her she would be treated likewise. I promise to pray for you and most of all for your daughter. May the Lord have mercy on those responsible for her life. God Bless you all - J. C. Hello my fellows.I write from Orange,CA.I express my opinion about Teri Schiavo's case.Is our nation a culture of death? What we have now, abortions,Dr.Jack Kevorkian practices, and making euthanasia legal?Sending by force to mercy killing as Teri Schiavo reminds me a demonic horrors that used in Nazi Germany .Hitler used sick and mental misfits as test lab guineapigs for his future gas chambers used for exterminating six million Jews of Europe.Yes our nation is no longer good place. One day it will stand before The Great Judgement of Our Lord. Teri must stay alive! - J. D. This is an urgent appeal that I believe our Lord has laid upon my heart to request of you and others in leadership to give prayerful and serious consideration to a call for national protest in response to the absolute failure, in all branches of our government, to protect the innocent life of Terry Schiavo from being extinguished for the obvious purpose of promoting and setting precedent in the practice of euthanasia in America. The alter on which she is being sacrificed is unacceptable before God. As the democratic process in our country is clearly broken, I suggest this protest be in the form of a work boycott where economic impact will be felt. Whether Terry survives this onslaught against her or not, the Church/people in America must not, cannot settle for passive resistance against so formidable a foe as institutionalized death. WWII certainly reveals the cost of waiting too long before acting. In our land, at this time, repentance will require sacrifice. We are in the next stage of total abdication of our responsibilities before God, the world and our call. Feeling good is not enough. Nazism, fascism, survival of the fittest, have already claimed too many lives. Freedom is waning. Please lead us to stand. - D. P. I believe as long as this lady has breath in her body, we as a caring Society have the responsibility to do everything possible to see she keeps Breathing, not to do this is inhumaine and shameful. - B. P. This poor soul, has been tortured enough. Why can't everyone just let her be? In the news we constantly see parents, relatives, friends, and adoptive parents starve their children to death and they serve jail time. So, how can these people get away with starving this young woman to death? There's no difference between what they want to do to Terri than what those people are doing to their children. Premeditated murder, they know if they take the feeding tube away from Terri there is an almost certain outcome of death. Should they serve jail time after this crime is committed? Look at all the criminals on death row. Men and women who have killed, abused, etc. etc. What is taking officials so long to go through with the executions? Is this a double standard here, prejudice, hypocrisy, whatever? Because it seems that starving an innocent young lady to death carries no burden other than a social backlash. How can this be? People say let her go to God, Don't forget if God wants her He can take her any time regardless whether or not the feeding tube is in place. He could have taken her when she went into a coma. These same people say she can't do anything, I hear she can breath on her own, she smiles and responds to you when you talk to her, that is better than a death sentence. Babies can't do anything for themselves should we kill all of them? Yes, she has handicaps, but she can get therapy to see if any improvement occurs. There are countless handicapped people, physically, emotionally, spiritually etc. in the world that are still doing great things, should we kill them just because they are not up to par. God looks down on us 24/7 He observes all the wrongs that all of us down here commit, do you think He says, “Gee that person just can't stop fighting with people”, or “Boy, that little girl is driving her parents crazy”, or “that baby is going to have mental handicap should I take their life's away”. No, he doesn't because we are all still here. Don't forget God made us and we are a huge melting pot are no two people are alike. So, how can these people involved in Terri's case do such a harsh thing! When a more amiable approach would be to forgo the cost until God does decide to take her after our best efforts are made. Life is sacred, given by God to be taken by God, we must do everything in our power to preserve life, not determine when it is expedient to end it. Take a death row inmates life 10- years in advance and give Terri 10 more years with the money saved!!! Just something to think about. - C. A. I am saddened that you are ignoring the 10,000 people starving to death in Darfur, not to mention hundreds of thousands in other places, while the U.S. and the international community twiddle their thumbs. Do you ignore them because they do not pray to the same God as the parents of Terri Schiavo? - D. R. Just wanted to let you know that we are thinking of all of you and that we are praying for God's will to be done in this case. If there is anything else besides prayers that we can do, please let us know. We will do all that we can. Please remember that God is always in control even though we don't think so and we can't always see it he is always in control. - J. M. Why didn’t Terri’s parents lawyer demand that Terri’s right to a trial by jury be afforded her in a case in which the state was called upon to end her life, thereby taking the case out of the hands of judge Greer and other corrupt judges? - J. W. K. I wonder how many people who want Terri Schiavo to continue to live in her condition, would trade places with her? If you haven't done so, get an "Advance Directive to Physician" immediately. - G. B. Emotionalism tends to cover facts. You neglected to report Terry Schiavo's husbands attempts to bring her back. Even experimental procedures failed, because her cerebral cortex had turned to liquid. Terry Schiavo died before the Supreme Court first denied review. The removal of the feeding tubes allows God to intervene and take away all the grandstanding. - C. K. You don't know what you are talking about. - M. This is a ridiculous question. The real question should be: why do we spend so much to keep someone who is brain dead alive while we allow 15,000 children a day to die of hunger. This is Republican pandering and hypocrisy to the max. Get a clue! - J. G. So...........what can we do about it??? I keep looking for someone to tell us what to do!! I am going to write the President, and Governor Bush, but anything else? - K. S. I know you must be tired of emails, letters, and calls regarding the Terri Schiavo case... but sadly I too have an opinion and feel I must share it... Dear Supreme Court The courts seem to be taking a few things for granted: That Michael Schiavo is telling the truth about Terri's desire not to be left in such a state. -- I will bow to this as FACT... I doubt any seemingly healthy 26 year old would want to live in such a state. That Terri is completely unable to utilize any cognitive functions -- a subject of debate by doctors it seems. That even if Terri COULD change her mind that after 15 years in this state she would not... The real question in my mind. I will take for granted at this point that Michael Schiavo really does believe that he has Terri's best interests in mind, yet I still come back to that question... What if, WHAT IF... what if Terri can, and has, changed her mind... What if she can be rehabilitated to a state where she can lead some degree of productive life, if only to be able to give joy to those who love her by showing them love and appreciation for their devotion... What if her brain, that amazing and mysterious organ that it is, has, to one degree or another, healed itself and she now, thanks to the 15 years of waiting to die, can utilize cognitive functions and has decided she wants to live? Is that so hard to believe? What if, all of the attention she has been getting, the hunger and thirst because of the removal of the feeding tube... what if all of this have re-awakened her... Would you have her die now of starvation and dehydration while hearing people around her talk about day to day mundane events?... I have intentionally kept away from my personal faith and where it demands that I stand... I have also tried to push aside my personal feelings with regards to Michael Schiavo's motives... I end up coming to the same conclusion as Judge Charles R. Wilson, even if the doctors are correct and her cerebral cortex has been liquefied and that she cannot feel, sense or think... What harm would it do to give a reprieve and, by court order, require those same doctors who now dispute those findings to prove it? Give them a timetable, make them report back, and most importantly make them do it for free -- thereby testing whether they are just chasing the money they think they can make... In the end I sit here in my comfortable chair, drinking water and eating chocolate covered raisins, if Terri dies I, like most of the population, will likely end up forgetting about her and the whole incident in a few months as life overwhelms those thoughts that do not directly effect me... The same is not true for Terri's family... is it to much to ask that they be shown that what Terri is displaying is simply autonomic reactions to stimuli and does not indicate consciousness? For me, part of the uninformed public, there are just to many what ifs... - V. K. I consider myself to have very conservative values and to trust God in all situations. Yet I am amazed that so many good conservative Christian organizations and people are siding with the parents of Terri Schiavo in this situation. I am so glad that my wife and I have living wills so that situations like this can be avoided. I really feel for her husband and the terrible persecution he is enduring for what he believes are his wife's desires. As a Christian I believe Terri is already with her God and Creator and probably is amazed at all the political maneuvering that is going on over what becomes of her physical body. It is terrible that the enemy has used such a situation to drive wedges between the various parts of the body of Christ. I pray that we as Conservative Christian Americans can get on with more important issues and let Terri be at peace with God. - G. P. As in centuries past, it seems that husbands are still permitted to dispose of their wives as they see fit!! - S. C. |
